Coverage topic 01

General liability.
Start with everyday interactions.

Customers, visitors, job sites and business activities can create liability questions. Understand the scope of the policy, not just its name.

What is general liability?

Commercial general liability insurance can respond to specified third-party bodily injury, property damage and other covered liability claims. Defense costs and the way they affect available limits depend on the policy.

It is a common starting point for a business insurance conversation, but it is not a universal policy for every kind of loss.

Questions to bring into the discussion

  • Are all of your actual business activities described correctly?
  • What per-occurrence and aggregate limits apply?
  • Do any contracts request additional insured status or particular endorsements?
  • Are products, completed operations or off-site activities relevant?
  • Which exclusions, deductibles or reporting conditions need closer review?

What should you prepare?

A plain-language description of your operations, where you work, who visits your premises, the products or services you provide, and any insurance requirements in your contracts.

General liability is not a substitute for professional liability, workers’ compensation, commercial auto or every cyber exposure. A certificate of insurance also does not replace the policy or its endorsements.
